"Everything I create must have an emotional connection with the audience and it all starts with the script" – Gio

Bio

Giovanni is an internationally award-winning tabletop food director with a strong visual sensibility and a distinctive style in food imagery. His fresh and honest approach to visual storytelling has led him to direct work for some of the world’s biggest brands. Most recently, Gio has worked with McDonald’s, Red Rooster, ALDI Supermarkets, Hungry Jack’s and Continental Foods, just to name a few.
Prior to directing, Gio spent many years as one of Australia’s most sought-after Key 2nd Assistant Directors, working alongside some of the world’s most esteemed filmmakers. His experience includes collaborations with Terrence Malick on The Thin Red Line, Bryan Singer on Superman Returns, Alex Proyas on Knowing, The Wachowskis on The Matrix Trilogy, Baz Luhrmann on Australia and Moulin Rouge!, George Lucas on Star Wars, and John Woo on Mission: Impossible II starring Tom Cruise. (To see his full feature film credits please visit his IMDb page.)These collaborations gave him an exceptional foundation before eventually stepping into the director’s chair to craft his own award-winning work.
Gio’s depth of knowledge in filmmaking and narrative allows him to work successfully across both short- and long-form formats. No matter the scale, technology, or scenario, Gio has most likely experienced it. After working as an Assistant Director, he moved into directing and created and directed the SBS series My Family Feast. In 2010 the series was nominated for a Logie Awards, won Best Food Program at the Australian Food Media Awards, and won Best in the World at the World Food Media Awards in Paris—beating personalities such as Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson in the same category.
This success led Gio to write and direct more than forty episodes of television, with his most recent series titled Eat Roam Relish, broadcast on SBS and internationally throughout Asia and Europe. Gio’s television food journey has seen him work with some of the world’s leading chefs. He has worked with four of the top ten chefs in the world, including Daniel Humm, Alain Passard, Dominique Crenn, Christian Puglisi, Aaron Franklin and Heston Blumenthal.
Locally, Gio has collaborated with many of Australia’s most respected chefs, including Mark Best, Jacques Reymond, Stefano Manfredi, Neil Perry, Sean Connolly, Audra Morrice, Matt Moran, Kylie Kwong, Luke Nguyen, Lyndey Milan, Tetsuya Wakuda, Poh Ling Yeow and Guillaume Brahimi, just to name a few. Gio’s television series are now broadcast in more than fifty countries globally and most recently on Amazon Prime Video.
When you hire Gio, you are working with a food lover, a storyteller and a director with a fresh, energetic approach. He is an enthusiastic collaborator who listens carefully to ideas and crafts concepts that continually exceed expectations.
